The Nukk
Location: Ottawa, ON
Project: Commercial
Size: 14,000 sq.ft
Date: 2014
The Nukk aims to transform commercial space into a community hub. The retail and commercial plaza uses landscaping and architectural features to create ‘Nukks’ for patrons to sit and gather. The iconic feature is the double-story canopy that welcomes visitors to the site. An open-air oculus brings drama to the space and provides sunlight to the large central tree.
The project integrates sustainable features including rainwater harvesting, native planting, and electric vehicle charging stations.
The courtyard’s primary purpose is for parking, but it is designed to be converted into a public basketball court or outdoor market. Understated design features elevate a simple structure into a hub for community engagement.
