#Altared

Located at a prominent corner in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood, #Altared is a compact café and performance venue that reimagines how a small space can serve multiple purposes throughout the day. Designed around adaptability, the project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture and carefully crafted furniture can create an engaging destination from morning coffee to evening performances.

 

The original interior was dark, inward-looking, and disconnected from the surrounding streetscape. The renovation introduced two strategically placed windows that establish a stronger relationship between the interior and the public realm. At the rear, a new take-out window encourages spontaneous pedestrian interaction and contributes to a lively, walkable neighbourhood culture. On the corner, a large picture window floods the space with natural light while placing the activity within on display, inviting curiosity and drawing people inside.

 

As daylight fades, the project reveals another layer of its identity. The corner window capitalizes on the site’s unique angled street parking, where the headlights of arriving vehicles illuminate the interior, creating an unexpected stage-like atmosphere for live performances. The architecture embraces this everyday urban condition, turning passing traffic into part of the experience.

 

At the heart of the project is a custom-designed system of movable plywood furnishings. During the day, these elements function as elegant retail displays, showcasing products and organizing the café. By evening, concealed hinges and integrated casters allow the displays to fold, pivot, and roll into place as seating and bar tables, quickly converting the interior into an intimate performance venue without sacrificing valuable floor area.

 

Although modest in size, #Altared demonstrates how thoughtful design can amplify the potential of a compact footprint. By strengthening its connection to the street, embracing flexibility, and celebrating the rhythm of daily and nightly activity, the project has helped turn a once-overlooked corner into a vibrant neighbourhood gathering place.
